Giovanni Buzi (Gianni) si è spento il 17 marzo 2010 dopo una lunga lotta contro il cancro. Pittore, scrittore, insegnante, era prima di tutto un essere libero, creativo e amante. Nato a Vignanello (provincia di Viterbo), il 10 marzo 1961, era andato a vivere a Roma all’ età di 18 anni per studiare l’Accademia delle Belle Arti e la letteratura nell’ambiente vibrante ed emancipatore dell’Italia di allora. Il suo umanesimo ateo si manifestava con una curiosità universale. La scoperta di altre persone, di altre culture, d’altre fonti di bellezza non hanno smesso di animarlo. Per lui l’unica oscenità era l’arroganza dei potenti e la rassegnazione dei sottomessi. Ha affrontato la malattia con un coraggio e una lucidità eccezionali. Si è fatto amare da tutti quelli che l’hanno curato. Durante i pochi mesi di tregua dal male, fra settembre e dicembre 2009, aveva dipinto centinaia di quadri che terranno viva la sua presenza. Quando ha saputo che non c’era più nessuna speranza, ha deciso di morire nella dignità e ha scelto il momento della sua partenza. Sopravviverà attraverso la sua pittura, la sua scrittura e l’immenso amore che ha dato in ogni momento della sua vita.

Giovanni Buzi (Gianni) est mort le 17 mars 2010 au terme d’une longue lutte contre le cancer. Peintre, écrivain, enseignant, il était avant tout un être libre, créateur et aimant. Né à Vignanello (province de Viterbe), le 10 mars 1961, il était parti vivre à Rome à l’âge de 18 ans pour étudier les Beaux-Arts et la littérature dans l’atmosphère vibrante et émancipatrice de l’Italie d’alors. Son humanisme athée se manifestait dans une curiosité universelle. La découverte d’autres personnes, d’autres cultures, d’autres sources de beauté n’a cessé de l’animer. Pour lui, la seule obscénité était dans l’arrogance des puissants et la résignation des soumis. Il a fait face à la maladie avec un courage et une lucidité extraordinaires. Il s’est fait aimer par l’ensemble du personnel soignant. Pendant quelques mois de rémission de la maladie, entre septembre et décembre 2009, il avait peint des centaines de tableaux qui perpétueront sa présence. Lorsqu’il a constaté qu’aucune autre issue n’existait, il a décidé de mourir dans la dignité et choisi le moment de son départ. Il survivra par sa peinture, par son écriture et par l’immense amour qu’il a donné tout au long de sa vie.

Giovanni Buzi (Gianni) died on 17 March 2010 after a long struggle against cancer.
He was a painter, a writer, a teacher, but above all he was a free, creative and loving person.
He was born in Vignanello (province of Viterbe in Italy) on March 10, 1961. At the age of 18 he left and went to study Fine Arts and literature in Rome where he reveled in the vibrant and liberating atmosphere of Italy at that time. He expressed his atheist humanistic spirit by an unfailable interest in all things of the universe. He loved meeting new people, discovering other cultures and unknown sources of beauty. The only thing he couldn’t stand was the arrogance of people in power and submissiveness. He confronted his illness with an extroardinary courage and clear mind. He was loved by all the people who took care of him, both at home or at the hospital. During the few months of remission from September to December 2009 he created hundreds of paintings which will carry on his presence. When he knew for sure that he would not survive he decided to die with dignity and he chose the moment of his departure. He will be remembered through his works of art, his books and all the love he gave us during his whole life.

The cremation took place in Brussels on 23 March 2010
